All Wheel Drive Used Cars With Good Gas Mileage

Assembling the list of the most expensive new production cars is not as easy as it seems. Unlike the least-expensive cars, where you can simply check the window sticker on a handful of economy cars, there is a never-ending arms race among the top 0.1% of cars.

In this rare air, the race for the fastest is almost inconsequential compared to the most exclusive, and therein lies the problem. The classification of "production car" is important, as hypercar manufacturers will produce an extremely limited run, or even a one-off, in order to provide something desirable to the billionaire who has it all. If an automaker produces one or two examples, we'll pass over it, but if there were maybe 20 or so made, that's good enough for us.

You may never see any of the following vehicles on the street. It's more likely the next time you see one will be at a Concours (extremely upscale car show) or at a museum. But when you do, you'll be able to impress others by knowing just how much money such a machine costs.

This is a limited-run based on an existing supercar that has been completely reworked by Italdesign, which is a storied Italian design house credited with penning numerous Alfa Romeos and Maseratis. As the name might suggest, the GT-R50 is based on the Nissan GT-R and just 50 examples will be produced.

The standard GT-R's body is heavily reworked, including a lower roof and a rear window that is stretched farther toward the all-new fixed rear wing. The result looks like it could have been the original concept car for the GT-R. The cabin can be personalized by customers, but it's still based on the original GT-R cabin. That's a bit of a disappointment for a million-dollar car, as the GT-R features a basic, mechanical dash design.

Pininfarina is yet another Italian design firm, and arguably the most iconic. It is responsible for decades of head-turning Ferrari designs, and its first-ever standalone production car is named for Pininfarina's founder, Battista "Pinin" Farina. It is built in the same factory as the Rimac Nevera and uses the same EV powertrain, but great lengths have been taken to ensure the chassis and underpinnings are thoroughly unique.

Like its Croatian counterpart, the all-electric Battista features a full carbon fiber monocoque construction and carbon fiber body panels. Inside, the steering wheel is flanked by touch screens that control the vehicle's functions. The Battista has a deploying rear spoiler that acts as an air brake, and it emits a synthetic engine sound through internal and external speakers.

The 1,877-horsepower hypercar is expected to arrive in the U.S. market in early 2022.

Within its lineup of high-speed supercars, McLaren has a series that exists above the rest. This is called the "Ultimate Series" and includes the P1 hypercar, the Senna track-ready weapon, and the Speedtail, which is designed to maximize the aerodynamic properties of the automobile. It is a testament to automotive engineering, with its three seats integrated into the carbon fiber chassis.

The Speedtail features a twin-turbocharged hybrid V8 powertrain that makes an incredible 1,055 horsepower and 848 pound-feet of torque. It features a Velocity mode that lowers the vehicle by 1.4 inches for improved aerodynamics and high-speed stability. It can launch from zero to 186 mph in just 13 seconds. The Speedtail features a full wraparound instrument panel and uses electrochromatic glass for automatic window tint.

Lotus is often associated with small, lightweight and minimalist sports cars. By comparison, the Evija is a moonshot. It features a radical design with large open tunnels along the rear wheels, made possible by the all-electric powertrain. With electric motors at all four wheels, the Evija makes a combined 1,972 horsepower and 1,254 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to leap from zero to 60 mph in under three seconds.

According to Lotus, the Evija has an estimated range of 250 miles. It has fast-charging capability, allowing it to go from 20% to 80% charge in just 18 minutes. The Evija features a futuristic interior with a fully digital instrument panel and a yoke-style steering wheel.

Zagato is another famed Italian design house, and has been known for gorgeously crafting new body styles for Alfa Romeos and Aston Martins. R-Reforged is a Swiss engineering company that has produced these modern interpretations of the 2011 Aston Martin Vantage V12 Zagato. Interestingly, these two cars – a Zagato Coupe and a Zagato Roadster – are sold in pairs (or "twins") for a cool $2.4 million.

In addition to the eye-catching body redesign, the pair receive chassis and suspension upgrades. They each feature a 608-horsepower 5.9-liter V12, which is up 40 horsepower from the standard Vantage V12. They each require 400 hours to craft the new bodywork, without messing with the carbon fiber components.

2022 Rimac Nevera

$2,400,000 | Units Produced: 150

If you find that the blistering performance of a Tesla Model S Plaid just isn't enough, Rimac will quench your all-electric need for speed. The Nevera is the follow-up to the C_Two from the low-volume Croatian EV hypercar company. It features a 120 kWh Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide battery, providing power to electric motors mounted at all four wheels. The motors are good for 1,914 total system horsepower and 1,741 pound-feet of torque.

That kind of power and torque will have you constantly shredding through tires. It can rocket from zero to 60 mpg in an absurd 1.9 seconds and execute the quarter-mile in 8.6 seconds. It provides 350-kWh fast-charging capability that allows it to go from 20% to 80% charge in 18 minutes. Rimac claims a range of 550 km, or about 340 miles, using the European WLTP cycle standard.

2022 Mercedes-AMG One

$2,700,000 | Units Produced: 275

The ethos behind the AMG One is simple enough: put a Formula 1 powertrain into a road car. In practice, it is far more difficult to accomplish. F1 engines are designed to be run at their absolute limit for just a few hours once a week. They don't like to idle, which is what a real-world production car still has to do every time you take it out on the road.

Like its Formula 1 counterpart, the AMG One features a turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 engine. The gas engine is paired with four electric motors and an energy recovery system. It puts mechanical power to the rear wheels and electric power to the front wheels in an all-wheel-drive system that makes an estimated 1,000 total horsepower.

The AMG One has been beset by delays, but it is finally entering production. When production is complete, all 275 owners will have a hypercar with F1-derived technology that's capable of reaching 217 mph.

2022 Gordon Murray T.50

$3,000,000 | Units Produced: 100

For many car enthusiasts, the McLaren F1 is the greatest performance car ever produced. It held the production-car top-speed record for more than a decade, and it won the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans even when the car was never designed with endurance racing in mind. The automotive genius behind the iconic F1 is Gordon Murray. He now has a car company all his own, and his first eponymous creation is the T.50.

In a time of hybrid and all-electric supercars, the T.50 features a gas-only 3.9-liter V12 that makes 654 horsepower at a motorcycle-level 11,500 rpm and an old-fashioned six-speed manual transmission. The T.50 boasts a unique integrated fan system, which helps channel air through the bodywork and muster downforce for both high-speed runs and cornering. Murray promises the T.50 to be one of the most connected driving experiences money can buy.

2021 Koenigsegg Jesko

$3,000,000 | Units Produced: 125

Like Gordon Murray, Christian Von Koenigsegg is a visionary car designer. The Jesko is the latest in a line of chart-topping hypercars from the Swedish carmaker. The Jesko features a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V8 that puts out 1,281 horsepower with premium gas. When filled with E85 biofuel, it is capable of 1,603 horsepower. It routes power through a nine-speed multi-clutch transmission. Koenigsegg claims that, with E85 fuel in use, the Jesko has a theoretical top speed of 300+ mph.

The Jesko features a dramatic center-supported spoiler. The dihedral doors and engine cover are able to open and close remotely via switches inside the car or key fob. The car also features active aerodynamics and carbon fiber wheels. Inside, the Jesko has a clever gyroscopic digital instrument panel that is connected to the steering wheel. As you turn the wheel left or right, the information on the screen always remains level.

2021 Pagani Huayra Roadster BC

$3,400,000 | Units Produced: 40

Like Koenigsegg, Pagani only builds one type of product: ludicrous hypercars. The Huayra is the follow-up to the brand's first car, the Zonda. The Roadster BC has been designed to commemorate the end of the Huayra production run, which started back in 2012. The car costs nearly three times as much as the original Huayra model, but justifies it with an insane level of attention to detail. It features meticulously crafted leather and Alcantara seats, as well as a genuine wood gearshift handle.

The Huayra BC Roadster features a Mercedes-AMG twin-turbocharged V12, tuned to put out 791 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque. It routes power to the rear wheels through a seven-speed single-clutch automatic gearbox.

Aston Martin Valkyrie Spider

$3,800,000 | Units Produced: 85

The Aston Martin brand certainly has a fascination with Norse mythology of late. Its newest hypercar is called the Valhalla, and its more expensive predecessor is dubbed the Valkyrie. Following the fixed-roof version, Aston Martin debuted the Spider variant at the 2021 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. It has a single removable roof panel, rather than a retractable top.

The Valkyrie features a hybrid powertrain with a 6.5-liter V12 engine, making a combined 1,139 horsepower. In open-top driving, the Valkyrie can reach a top speed of 205 mph, but with the top in place, the hypercar can hit 217 mph. It's expected to reach customers by mid-2022.

As noted, the Valkyrie will eventually be succeeded by the Valhalla. That car will not arrive until 2023 as a 2024 model. When it does arrive, it will have a starting price closer to $800,000.

2021 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport

$3,900,000 | Units Produced: 30

If we were to do a list that included every one of Bugatti's one-offs or special-edition Chiron variants, it could take up more than half the list. The Chiron Super Sport is made to celebrate the specially modified variant of the Chiron that broke 300 mph. The production variant features similar modifications, though it "only" tops out at 273 mph.

The Super Sport features some aerodynamic modifications from racecar builder Dallara to help enable its top-speed performance. The rear end is 10 inches longer, and the exhaust outlets have been moved to the center of the car to make room for larger rear diffusers. Propelling it all is Bugatti's quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 engine. It makes 1,577 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of torque, routed to all four wheels. Unlike some entrants on this list that feature futuristic-but-minimalist interiors, the Chiron's cabin is extremely comfortable and lavish.
